Achillea millifolium variety: “nevralgina”; large leaved milfoil, Esp.: XE "milenrama" milenrama; a perennial herb; part used: leaves; main use in Brazil: colic, headache, fever, antiseptic, bactericide; some of the main constituents: (-azulene, essential oils, flavonoids; taste: slightly bitter. Popular use: menstruation pains and colic; headaches, migraine, combats the symptoms of flu.
Baccharis genistelloides (=B. trimera) carqueja, Esp.: carqueja; a perennial herb, cultivared, but is sometimes found as a weed; part used: herb; main use in Brazil: digestion, liver, obesity; some of the main constituents: nopineno, carquejol, "- and $-cardinene, calamene, eledol, eudesmol, acetate of carquejol, sesquiterpenes, saponins, flavonoids, resin, diterpenic lactones, esteroids, polyfenols, tanins; taste: bitter. Popular use: liver, kidneys, digestive, appetite regulator and with weight control.
Bauhinia forficata bauhinia, Esp.: XE "pezuna de vaca" pezuna de vaca, pata de vaca; a tree, sometimes cultivated with organic methods, but usually extracted from the wild, where it invades woods and forests; part used: leaves; main use in Brazil: cholesterol, assisting in diabetes treatment; some of the main constituents: tanins, flavonoids: kaempferol, rutin, quercitin; glicosides; pinitol; alcaloids; catecol, chalcons e cumarins. The hipoglicemiante action probably comes from a glicoprotein. Taste: "herbal" taste. Popular use: purifies the blood, diuretic; kidney problems.
Cymbopogon citratus lemon grass; Esp.: hierba de limón; a perennial grass; part used: leaves; main use in Brazil: aromatic, antispasmodic, muscle relaxant; some of the main constituents: citral, citronelal, geraniol, indolic alkaloids, saponins; taste: pleasant, lemon flavour. Popular use: aromatic tea; stomachic, calmative (because it has digestive properties!); makes a refreshing iced tea.
Leonotis XE "Leonotis:nepataefolia" nepetaefolia XE "giant lion's ear" giant lion's ear Esp.: XE "gros pompom" XE "herbe chandelle" XE "cola de leon" cola de leon, an annual herb, cultivated with organic agricultural methods in order te be used. The herb is used as an infusion for respiratory problems: lungs, bronquitis, asma, coughing; to treat problems with uric acid: reumatism, gout, as a diuretic; as a general tonic: during general weekness, as an stimulant; and for its carminative, antispasmodic, balsamic and nevralgic properties. It contains some sesquiterpenic lactones, nepetefolinol, the glicoside: leonotina, tanins, etheric oil, ácido labdanic acid, trimetoxi-cumarins, diterpen, metoxinepetifolio.
Lippia alba lípia, cidrão, lemon verbena, Esp.: juanislama, XE "cidrera" cidrera; a trailing shrub; part used: the herb: branches with leaves and flowers; main use in Brazil: antispasmodic, stomachic, emmenagogic (to induce or increase menstrual flow), diaphoretic; some of the main constituents: limonene, citral, carvone; taste: pleasant, lemon flavour. Popular use: aromatic tea; against spasms, digestive, calmative and relaxant (stress); makes a refreshing iced tea.
Maytenus illicifolia maytenus, Esp.: maitén; a tree, wild plant under controlled and sustainable management or grown with organic methods; part used: leaves; main use in Brazil: stomach ulcers, antiseptic, gastro-intestinal functions; some of the main constituents: tannins, terpenes, such as maitensin, maitenoprin, maitambutin and maitolidin; flavonoids, anthocyans; taste slightly bitter and acrid. Popular use: gastritis and ulcer, stomachic.
Ocimum gratissimum F. caryophylata; giant basil, clove basil, Esp.: albahaca de vaca; a shrub; part used: the whole herb, with leaves stalk and flowers; main use in Brazil: emmenagogic, digestive; some of the main constituents: eugenol, cineol, flavonoids, tannins; taste: pleasant basil flavour, with a taste of cloves. Popular use: as an aromatic tea, stomachic, digestive; anti-rheumatic.
Pfaffia glomerata also known as "Pfaffia paniculata" pfaffia, Brazilian ginseng Esp.: suma, pfaffia, a perennial herb; parts used: the roots; main use in Brasil: against stress, blood circulation problems, anaemia, diabetes, astenia. It is used as a general tonic, immunostimulant, cicatrizive, antiinflamatory, used for convalescence e during feebleness and infermaty. It gives a clearer mind and works as a celular regenerator. Possibly it is a carcinostatic e offers anti-carcinogenic properties. Powdered root is used for convalescence e during the menostasia, menopause. It has a light herb flavour.
Psidium guayava guava, Esp.: guayaba roja; a tree; a special, very rustic red fruited variety is medicinal; part used: leaves; main use in Brazil: astringent, diarrhoea; some of the main constituents: tannins, polyphenols, essential oil, flavonoids; taste: pleasant, "fruity" flavour. Popular use: to help cure diarrhoea, not to stop it. It is used by health conscientious people with an excess of food fibre in their diet who loose too much liquid in their faeces.
Stachytarpheta cayannensis Brazilian tea (so named because during last century it was used to adulterate black tea, or even as a substitute); Brazilian vervain, Esp.: verbena roja; a bushy herb, parts used herb with the flowers, main use in Brazil: stimulant, febrifuge, sudorific, diuretic; contains tannins, but no caffeine; taste: a pleasant "herbal" flavour. Popular use: emmenagogic (to induce or increase menstrual flow).
Urera XE "Urera:baccifera" baccifera Gaud. XE "urtigão" XE "cansanção" XE "urtiga-vermelha" XE "scratch bush" scratch bush, XE "nettle tree" nettle tree XE "feuilles enragées" XE "boombrandnetel" Esp.: XE "ortiga de caballo" ortiga de caballo XE "ortiga blanca" Family Urticaceae. A large perannual herb, with large leaves with stinging hairs. Leaves are used for respiratory problems: coughing, bronquitis and for urinary problems: diuretic, anuria and disuria. It contains betain, colin, lecitin, fitosterenes, tannins, and carbonic, formic and salicilic acid; vitamin A and C, minerals, such as iron. It has a herb flavour.
Vernonia condensata vernonia, alumã/ Brazilian boldo, Esp.: XE "yerba del sudor" yerba del sudor, XE "sudorifico" sudorifico; a shrub; part used: leaves; main use in Brazil: anti-ulcerogenic, hepatic tonic, diuretic, analgesic, digestive; main constituents: sesquiterpenic lactones; taste: bitter. Popular use: against hangover, liver problems, as a tonic; as a digestive and a stimulant, is an important herb to alleviate symptoms of flu.
